Spotlight: Our Vaccine Research Program
Vaccine development begins long before clinical trials — it starts at the bench, with careful selection and engineering of antigens that can train the immune system effectively. This spotlight looks at how our molecular virology research group approaches that early-stage work.
From target to candidate
The process typically starts with identifying viral or bacterial proteins that trigger a strong, protective immune response. Researchers then use structural and computational tools to engineer stable versions of these antigens, followed by testing in cell-based and animal models to evaluate immunogenicity.
Collaboration across the department
This work draws on expertise from across the department — protein engineering for antigen stabilization, immunology for response evaluation, and bioinformatics for epitope prediction — reflecting the collaborative, cross-disciplinary culture the department aims to foster.
